In a monumental victory for autism advocacy, the U.S. Senate has officially passed the Autism CARES Act of 2024, sending the bill back to the House of Representatives for final approval. This landmark legislation reaffirms the federal government’s dedication to supporting individuals with autism and their families by expanding and enhancing critical programs nationwide.
Since its inception in 2006, the Autism CARES Act (Collaboration, Accountability, Research, Education, and Support) has had a transformative impact. Over $5 billion has been invested in federal autism activities to date, funding vital programs that advance research, enhance services, and improve the quality of life for individuals across the autism spectrum. The 2024 reauthorization builds on this legacy with nearly $2 billion in authorized funding over the next five years. These funds will continue to support essential programs within the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Expanding Opportunities, Addressing New Challenges
The Autism CARES Act of 2024 introduces eight key enhancements aimed at addressing critical gaps in care and resources. These include:
- Focusing on autism and aging, ensuring lifelong support for individuals.
- Increasing inclusivity in research to better reflect the diverse autism community.
- Strengthening the developmental-behavioral pediatrician workforce.
- Prioritizing mental health support for autistic individuals.
- Expanding communication supports for those with limited or no speech.
These advancements represent a forward-thinking approach to meeting the evolving needs of autistic individuals and their families.
Autism Speaks: A Champion for Change
The passage of the Autism CARES Act in the Senate would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of Autism Speaks and its partners. President and CEO Keith Wargo praised the bipartisan efforts of Senators Ben Ray Luján and Susan Collins, as well as Representatives Chris Smith and Henry Cuellar, for their leadership in championing this legislation.
“This next iteration expands efforts to address gaps in autism healthcare and services,” said Wargo. “This law represents a forward-looking approach to driving progress in research, supports, and services for autistic individuals across the spectrum and lifespan for years to come.”
The Road Ahead
With the Senate’s approval, the Autism CARES Act now heads to the House of Representatives for final passage. Time is of the essence, as the temporary extension of the previous legislation is set to expire on December 20, 2024. Autism advocates are urging the House to act swiftly to ensure uninterrupted support for these essential programs.
